Sleepaway camps offer all the fun of day camps, plus so much more! Evenings filled with campfire songs, meals in a mess hall, silly skits and traditions, and the special bonds that come from sharing a bunk. 

There are many overnight options to choose from right here in central North Carolina. We’ve rounded up 8 leads to start your search with camps less than 2 hours from the Triangle. 

Each camp offers a unique take on the overnight experience, so dig into the descriptions to find one that matches your family’s values and your child’s personality. Camp environments vary widely, from rustic tents to college dorms. Some camps have a Christian mission, while others are secular. Many offer the opportunity to take a deep dive into specialized areas of interest, sometimes in intensive multi-week sessions. There’s something for everyone!

1. Camp Flintlock

Residential Camps | Organization

Location:Southeast of Raleigh

At Camp Flintlock, children connect with history by getting a taste of colonial-era life. In addition to day camps at two locations, Camp Flintlock runs immersive overnight camps at a rustic campsite in North Carolina’s Piedmont. Campers don period-appropriate clothing, cook over campfires, chop wood, haul water, and sleep in historical tents. With challenges like the Tomahawk Throw, colonial games, and a talent show, it’s sure to be an experience to remember.


2. Chestnut Ridge

Chestnut Ridge runs weeklong day and residential camps throughout the summer serving elementary to high school age. Choose from special themes like horseback riding, herpetology, rafting, and leadership, or go for the “best of camp” option for a sampling of popular activities. In addition to plenty of options for younger campers, Chestnut Ridge offers a particularly robust line-up of options for high schoolers to build leadership skills and enjoy outdoor adventures. With a Christian mission, the camp strives to help children build their relationship with God.

3. Don Lee

Residential Camps | Organization

Location:Eastern NC along the Neuse River
315 Camp Don Lee Rd., Arapahoe, NC
Ages:6 – 18

Don Lee combines water sports and coastal explorations with Christian faith-building in its overnight camps for elementary through high school. The heart of the Camp Don Lee experience is a small group camping model. In this unique trademark of Camp Don Lee, the group grows in trust and faith as they work, play, and worship together. A low ropes challenge course, crafts, drama, and sailing round out the experience as campers bond with new friends in close-knit small groups. Choose from sessions lasting one to four weeks. Don Lee Camp and Retreat Center is affiliated by faith to the NC United Methodist Church.


4. YMCA Camps

The YMCA runs some of the largest overnight camps in our area. Five are within a couple hours of the Triangle: Camp Kanata (in Wake Forest), Camp Weaver (Greensboro), Camp Hanes and Camp Cheerio (toward the mountains), and Camps Sea Gull and Seafarer (at the coast). Each features traditional camp activities such as water sports, swimming, ropes courses, field games, and arts & crafts, as well as an array of special activities tailored to the local environment, such as sailing, rafting, and caving. 


5. Local Colleges and Universities

Many of the colleges and universities in our area run summer programs, giving middle and high schoolers a chance to enjoy a taste of life on a college campus while taking a deep dive into areas of interest like STEM, foreign languages, sports, and the arts. The big three—Duke University, UNC Chapel Hill, and NC State University—all host summer programs, but don’t stop there! Great options are also available at other campuses including Meredith College, NC Central University, and Campbell University. The NC School of Science and Math also runs residential programs at its own two campuses in addition to four other UNC System campuses across the state.


6. 1870 Farm

At the historic 1870 Farm, campers connect with nature, animals, and each other on a 17-acre farm replete with pastures, forest, gardens, and a pond. With themes like junior veterinarians and entrepreneurship, overnight campers enjoy days of hands-on learning at the farm followed by evenings spent on campus at UNC Chapel Hill. From pickling cucumbers to caring for animals, building forts to playing gaga ball, the camp blends purposeful learning with outdoor fun for children and teens.

7. Quaker Lake

Summer Camps | Organization

Location:Southeast of Greensboro

Ages:8 – 17 (for residential camps)

At Quaker Lake Camp’s 255-acre campus, campers enjoy traditional summer camp fun with lake activities, crafts, and nature exploration while cultivating Quaker values. Younger campers get an introduction to camp life with a rotation of tried-and-true activities while those in older age groups follow their interests to select from a broader array of options such as mountain biking, climbing tower, archery, cooking, and theater. Friendly competitions encourage campers to grow their skills and collaborate with peers.


8. New Hope Camp

Overnight Camps | Organization

Location:North Chapel Hill

Ages:7 – 14 (for residential camps)
5 – 14 (for day camps)

New Hope Camp offers traditional camp fun like pool time, sports, games, and nature activities along with Christian faith-focused personal reflection and community time. Overnight campers enjoy night hikes and canoeing after dark, along with a special dance on the last night of the session. Rookie campers (rising 3rd-5th grade) ease into the sleepaway experience by spending half the week as day campers before transitioning to overnight for two nights in the bunk houses.
