January 2026
When you’re planning your family’s summer, one date matters more than almost any other: the first day of school in August. It’s tempting to focus on when school ends (since that happens first), but focusing on the tail end of the summer is essential to avoid last-minute scrambling or unexpected gaps.
We’ve rounded up school start dates for the 2026-2027 school year for major Triangle-area school districts, along with tips on how to use this information to plan camps early and save yourself some stress later.
Why school start dates matter when planning summer camps
Many parents are surprised to learn that a majority of summer camps wrap up in early August. That means the last few weeks of summer—those dog days of August when even the pool seems to have lost its sparkle—can be the hardest to find childcare coverage.
If your child’s school starts in late August, you can expect that camp options for the last two weeks of the summer will be much more limited and spots will get snapped up faster. Missing the boat on camps for this period can leave you with few choices for childcare, especially since it’s hard to even find sitters after college students head back to school.
Don’t despair! You don’t have to plan everything at once. There are many more camp options in June and July, so you can afford to be a bit more flexible earlier in the summer. But for those late-August weeks, early planning is key. That’s where having school start dates nailed down—and using a tool like the KidsBooked app—can make all the difference.
A quick note on North Carolina school calendar laws
Under North Carolina state law, traditional public schools cannot start earlier than the Monday closest to August 26. In 2026, that means many traditional-calendar schools will begin on Monday, August 24.
However:
- Year-round schools are exempt and typically roll over after July 1, with staggered track start dates
- Charter and private schools are also exempt and can set their own calendars
- Pre-K programs sometimes start later than K–12
Always double-check your specific school’s calendar, especially if you have kids in different grades or programs.
So…when does school start in your district?
Here’s a roundup of Triangle-area school start dates for the 2026-2027 school year, based on currently available calendars.
1. Wake County Public School System
Monday, Aug. 24: First day of school for traditional calendar

2. Durham Public Schools
2026-2027 calendars are not yet released, but should be soon!
Durham Public Schools typically publish calendars later than some neighboring districts, so keep an eye out for updates. In the meantime, an August 24 start date is probably a reasonable assumption when lining up camps.
3. Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools
Monday, Aug. 24: First day of school for grades K-12
Monday, Aug. 31: First day of school for Pre-K/Head Start
Families with younger children should note the later Pre-K start date, which may require an extra week of camp coverage.
4. Chatham County Schools
Tuesday, Aug. 25: First day of school
5. Orange County Schools
Monday, Aug. 24: First day of school for traditional calendar
Wednesday, July 15: First day of school for year-round calendar
A friendly reminder about calendar changes
School districts occasionally make adjustments to published calendars, and there have been recent legislative efforts to give districts more flexibility in setting start dates. Be sure to double-check your district’s official calendar and read email updates from your school.
