Eno River Field Station

Eno River Field Station

by Eno River Association

The Eno River Field Station program transforms the outdoors into a living laboratory where discovery comes alive. Set at the Confluence Natural Area along the West and East Forks of the Eno River, campers develop their interest and skills in environmental sciences through experiential learning guided by scientists, researchers, and educators. Each day blends adventure with authentic field study, giving participants the chance to investigate the natural world and gain skills in observation, inquiry, and collaboration. Small groups rotate through sessions that may include surveying plants with iNaturalist, identifying aquatic macroinvertebrates, examining air and water quality, or studying reptiles, amphibians, and fish. Campers might learn tree-ring coring to uncover climate history, map geological features, journal their discoveries, or take part in hummingbird banding and bat surveys. A canoe trip along the Eno and an optional overnight campout introduce new perspectives on the river’s ecosystem and the nocturnal creatures that thrive after dark. The Confluence Natural Area provides the perfect backdrop, with trails, creeks, forests, and rivers to explore, along with a central pavilion and gathering spaces. Beyond scientific skills, the program emphasizes respect for nature, confidence in the outdoors, and an appreciation for how ecosystems connect to our daily lives.
