April 2026

Your teen may be too old to need camps for childcare, but that doesn’t mean they’re done with camps. In fact, school breaks are a prime opportunity for personal growth, giving teens a chance to immerse themselves in activities they’re passionate about, level-up their skills in areas like arts or sports, and deepen their social and emotional development with new challenges and leadership opportunities.

Our Top Tips for Parents of Teens provides a starter guide to keeping teens busy when school’s out, covering everything from camp experiences to volunteering to gainful employment. Here, we take a spin around some of the unique camp options that can enrich and empower your teen all the way through high school.

Of course, this is just the tip of a very cool iceberg. Hop over to the KidsBooked app to find tons of other camp options for teens in the Triangle.

Learning to Lead

Lots of camps offer opportunities for teens to gain leadership skills. Some programs offer standalone camp experiences that are designed just for teens. Others invite teens to participate in facilitating camp experiences for younger children, whether as a paid counselor, as a counselor in training, or as a volunteer.

Just as younger kids gain confidence by trying new things at camp, older kids have a lot to gain from taking on responsibilities such as leading games and activities, role-modeling positive interactions, and helping to maintain a safe and tidy environment.

Leaders-in-training (LIT) or counselors-in-training (CIT) programs are often offered at a discounted rate compared with regular camp enrollment. Some camps accept teen volunteers at no charge. Older and more experienced teens may be eligible for a paid role as a full counselor.

A few of the many Triangle camps that offer leadership options for teens include Emerson Waldorf School, Laying Hen Farm, Say It Kids! Studio Camp, and Schoolhouse of Wonder. Find more on the KidsBooked app.

Action & Adventure

For adventure-loving kids, camps can be a great place to explore adrenaline-spiking activities in a safe and empowering environment. As they climb to new heights (think ropes courses and rock climbing), zip through a half-pipe (skateboards and BMX), or navigate nature at a new level (wilderness backpacking and whitewater rafting), your teen can enjoy pushing their limits while you can rest easy knowing they’ve got expert guidance to do it right.

Adventure camps are a handy way to experience new thrills without investing in expensive gear. Plus, unlike family vacations or weekend excursions, camps come with the element of unparalleled peer bonding. Nothing else quite matches the friendships you forge when overcoming your fears together!

Some options to consider include teen backpacking and wilderness camps at Piedmont Wildlife Center, action sports and challenge course camps offered by Cary Parks & Rec, and circus skills camps at Cirque de Vol. Find more on the KidsBooked app.

Sports & Fitness

Some kids just crave movement. If your teen loves a high-energy, high-impact summer, sports camps have you covered. With expert coaching and weeklong (or multi-week) training sessions, sports skills camps offer a great way to hone kids’ technique for the school-year sports they already know and love. Or, with more casual camps, they can try out a new sport in a low-pressure, low-commitment setting suitable for beginners.

Whether leveling up or broadening out, sports camps are a fun outlet for teens to have fun and stay fit over the summer. Some examples of teen sports camps include cheer and tumbling camps at Inspire Athletics Cheer, soccer skills camps at NCFC Youth, tennis and swim camps offered by Tennisbloc, and ultimate frisbee camps by Chapel Hill Parks & Rec. Find more on the KidsBooked app.

All About the Arts

Creative teens often spend their free time imagining, tinkering, and making things. With arts camps, out-of-school time can become a time to cultivate craft and explore self-expression. Spending time making music, telling stories, or creating masterpieces is not only fun, but empowering for teens.

Art, music, dance, and theatre camps offer a supportive environment to deepen artistic skills and experiment with different forms and media, aided by expert guidance and peer collaborators. Whether they’re upcycling clothes to fulfil their fashion dreams or staging an original musical comedy, camps offer the chance for teens to lean into what they love and appreciate their own capabilities.

Creative camps with great options for teens include theatrical programs like Durant Road Musical Theatre or Center Theatre Company, ComedyWorx for improv, the ArtsCenter for an eclectic variety of artistic forms (tarot, anyone?), and Oh.Em.G! Creative Studio Camps for kids with a passion for fashion. Find more on the KidsBooked app.

Skills & Thrills

Some kids know exactly how they want to spend their time, while others might need to wander a few paths to find their fit. Whether they’re committed or considering, camps offer a welcoming place for teenagers to immerse themselves in an interest area, deepen their skills and experience, and find friends they can totally nerd out with.

Camp offerings for teens span a huge range of topics, from anime to baking to cybersecurity—giving a taste of different disciplines, career paths, or hobbies they might want to pursue. So sit down together, marvel at the options, and see what catches their eye. With teens, sometimes it really helps to follow their lead.

Some camps with teen options include Durham Academy Summits, Carolina Friends School, Bull City Robotics, Triangle Chess, and Conundrum Escapes.
How can I find camps for teenagers near Raleigh, Durham, or Chapel Hill?

Camps for teens offer many of the same benefits as camps for younger kids, but they offer even more opportunities for independence, responsibility, and challenge. With real-world activities built around in-person interactions, the camp environment brings teenagers out of their day-to-day routines (and screens!) to expand their mental, physical, and social horizons. Other camps offer standalone experiences to cultivate leadership skills and chart college pathways as teens prepare for life beyond high school.
Find your groove with camps for music-loving kids.

April 2026

Do you have one of those kids who loves to make noise just for the fun of it? Or one who’s forever bopping along to some rhythm, even if it’s only in their head? Why not channel that penchant for sound into a joyful hobby?

Whether they’re just trying things out or launching a passion that will last a lifetime, there’s no doubt that music is good for kids. It’s a powerful booster for brain development, an outlet for emotional expression, a platform for collaboration and social skills, and so much more.

The Triangle has plenty of music instruction options year-round, but a weeklong music camp offers some unique benefits. Camps often give kids a chance to experiment with multiple instruments or musical styles, so they can sample a variety of sounds and techniques without the pressure to commit to lessons or purchase an instrument. With longer daily sessions and a group learning structure, children also enjoy a variety of activities to bond with friends as they learn to make music together.

However, parents find that it’s not always straightforward to find music camps. Some camps are 100% focused on music, and these can be a great starting place. But don’t stop there! Many other camps offer music programming during a few weeks each summer, sometimes in combination with other themes like theater, visual arts, technology, and dance. A KidsBooked search makes it possible to find the musical needles in the haystack of Triangle camp options.

Here are 8 leads to start your search. At the KidsBooked app, you can find additional camps with musical themes and filter by age, location, and more. May your summer be filled with song!

This year’s camp offerings include a music camp where children learn to layer sounds and movement and experience the power of music.

February 2026

If you’ve got a pre-school-aged kid, this may be your first year looking for summer camps. Congratulations! Just like lots of other parenting milestones, this one comes with its own set of exciting surprises, opportunities, and challenges.

One of the less-fun surprises is that camp choices can be somewhat limited for children under age 5, and even more limited for kids under 4. But take heart! Camps for younger kids do exist, and there are probably some great options near you. KidsBooked can help you find programs that fit the bill.

We help you sort through the pros and cons of sampling new camps versus sticking with what’s worked in the past.

February 2025

Parenting is a constant balancing act between holding steady and pushing forward—managing the day-to-day of family life while allowing space for challenge and growth. When it comes to summer camps, that balance often shows up as a familiar question: Should we stick with the same camps that worked last year, or try something new?

There’s no one right answer. But thinking through the pros and cons of each approach can help you land on a plan that feels right for your family.

The comfort of camps you know and love

Returning to a camp your child already knows comes with some clear advantages. Everyone knows what to expect—from the daily routine to the activities to the overall vibe—which can be comfortingly grounding when the end of the school year sends your family routine topsy-turvy. As a parent, you’ve already figured out the logistics: drop-off, pick-up, what to pack, and how to communicate with camp staff. And for some kids, returning year after year means reconnecting with camp friends and counselors they already trust.

There’s real value in that sense of continuity. Familiar environments can boost confidence and help kids feel secure, especially if the year has brought significant changes or challenges at home or school.

The growth that comes from facing the unknown

At the same time, branching out can be incredibly powerful for expanding one’s horizons. A new camp means new people, new skills, and new ways for a child to see themselves. Yes, stepping into an unfamiliar environment can feel a little daunting—but it can also be exciting in the best way.

Learning how to navigate new spaces, build relationships from scratch, and try activities they’ve never done before are life skills in their own right. Research-backed insights highlighted in our conversation with an expert, The Science of Summer Camp, show that camp experiences—especially ones that push kids just outside their comfort zones—support independence, resilience, and social growth. Sometimes the magic of camp happens precisely because it’s something new.

Considering a legacy camp

For long-time Triangle families, there’s another layer to the decision: legacy camps. Sending your child to the same camp you attended as a kid can be a meaningful way to connect across generations. Sharing stories, traditions, and a love of a place can create a special bond—and your child may be delighted to learn that you were once a kid, too (even if it was a million years ago).

That said, it’s worth approaching legacy camps with an open mind. Your child is their own person, the camp itself may have changed over time, and big expectations can unintentionally feel like pressure. It’s best to consider a legacy camp alongside other options, sharing your own experiences and excitement while genuinely listening to your child’s thoughts on the camps they’re most excited to attend—even if your favorite childhood camp doesn’t make the cut.

When nerves emerge

If your child—or you—are feeling anxious about trying a new camp, pause and dig into the “why.” Is it about trust? Logistics? Fear of the unknown? It’s completely normal to feel unsure about committing to something you’ve never tried before. Our blog, Navigating Camp Anxiety, explores how both kids and parents can experience camp-related worries, and offers practical ways to work through them together.

New experiences are something kids will encounter again and again—new schools, teams, teachers, friends, and activities. Trying new things helps children appreciate their own capacity to adapt to unfamiliar places, connect with new people, and learn from small failures. Being open to the unfamiliar also leads to a positive snowball effect, as kids gain more confidence and independence with each success. Still, it’s important not to force the issue. You know your child best, and honoring their readiness matters.

Finding the middle way

For many families, the sweet spot is often somewhere in between. If your child loves their usual camps, consider sprinkling in a couple of new experiences to gently stretch their comfort zone. If they’re eager to try a full line-up of new camps but you’re afraid they’ll get cold feet as summer approaches, balance new camps with a few familiar favorites to provide anchors throughout the summer.

Sampling can help too. Many summer camps offer single-day teacher workday camps or weekend classes, which can offer a low-pressure way to test the waters. And remember: Camp directors are often eager to help. As highlighted in our conversation with a camp director, Camp Behind the Scenes, many are happy to answer questions, hop on a call, or even offer a quick tour so you and your child can feel more confident before committing.

At the end of the day, summer camp planning isn’t about finding a perfect formula—it’s about tuning into your child, your family rhythms, and what feels like the right mix of comfort and challenge this year. Whether you lean tried-and-true, brand new, or somewhere in between, thoughtful planning sets the stage for a summer full of growth, connection, and fun.

January 2026

Summer has a way of sneaking up on even the most organized families. One minute you’re packing away the holiday decorations, and the next there’s a frenzy of camps opening for registration and you’re staring at a calendar full of question marks from June to August.

Camps can be an incredible opportunity for kids to explore new interests, build confidence, and make memories—but planning them can feel like a full-time job. The good news? A little upfront strategy goes a long way. Here are our most game-changing tips to plan your summer right.

1. Get a handle on your calendar.

Before you fall down the camp-search rabbit hole, zoom out and look at the big picture. When does school actually end—and start again? (Get help with our handy list of local school start dates.) When are your family vacations? Are there times when family, friends, or neighbors might be available to help with childcare?

Map out which weeks must be covered by camps and which ones might be optional or more flexible. With this clarity, you can focus your energy where it matters most and avoid booking camps you’ll have to cancel later.

2. Talk to your kids.

This step is easy to skip—and it’s one of the most important. Sit down with your kids and ask about their hopes and dreams for this summer. Are they eager to try something new, or do they want more of what they already love? Do they want a different experience each week, or a few camps for multiple weeks? What aspects of camp make them excited, curious, or nervous?

It can also help to reflect on past experiences. Our blog on 20 great questions for your camp debrief is a great resource—and if you skipped the end-of-summer debrief last year, it’s not too late to do it now. Understanding what worked (and what didn’t) will make this summer’s planning smoother and help your kids feel more invested in the process.

3. Focus on the logistics.

A camp might sound perfect on paper—but if the logistics don’t work, it can quickly become stressful. Think about your work schedule and commute. What drop-off and pick-up times are realistic? Do you need full-week camps, or could you handle part-week options? Must your kids attend the same camps as their siblings, or could different camps work if the locations and schedules line up?

Be aware that some “full-day” camps actually end at 2 or 3 p.m. Do you need camps that provide care through the end of your workday, or do you have backup help for that afternoon gap? Being honest about your non-negotiables (and your nice-to-haves) makes it much easier to find camps that your family can truly enjoy—without burnout.

4. Plan together.

You don’t have to do this alone. Planning camps alongside co-parents, grandparents, neighbors, or parents of your kids’ friends can solve multiple challenges at once. Kids often have a better experience when they attend camp with a buddy, and planning together can also open the door to carpooling solutions that make everyone’s life easier. Even a few coordinated weeks can make a big difference—less driving, fewer schedule headaches, and happy kids who get to share new experiences with people they know.

KidsBooked has the tools to make all this possible.

January 2026

We’re big believers in the power of connection and community. We sure do love living in the Triangle, and we want KidsBooked to be a force for good in making our area even better for parents and families.

We laid out our philosophy on this last year in our blog This Place Is for You, and it still rings true. Camps are about so much more than childcare, and a camp-planning platform is about more than just getting your to-do’s done faster. We hope KidsBooked can help to build a stronger community here in the Triangle.

As part of this mission, the KidsBooked team is out and about! Here are two fun places you’ll catch us this month.

Kids Exchange

We’re THRILLED to have a booth at the Kids Exchange Consignment Sale! If you don’t know it already, KX Consignment is THE place to get discount kid gear for families in the Triangle. Strollers, baby swings, and bikes as far as the eye can see. Racks and racks of kid clothes, from itty-bitty baby booties to a like-new set of school clothes for your 5th-grader to tear up at recess. The sheer volume of stuff is truly a sight to behold.

Since it’s consignment, everything costs a fraction of what you’d pay in stores. Even better, you’re supporting a more circular economy, so all that kid gear gets to live out its full lifespan instead of winding up in a landfill after just one use. Whether you’re buying, selling, or both, coming to Kids Exchange is a smart way to stretch your hard-earned cash and keep up with your kids’ ever-changing needs.

Our booth will be right by the checkout line. We’ll be conducting customer interviews on site to help us serve Triangle parents even better. So come and chat with us, or drop us a line anytime. We’d love to hear your feedback.

What:

Kids Exchange Consignment Sale

When:

January 19-26

Where:

Jim Graham Building, NC State Fairgrounds in Raleigh

More:

https://kxconsignment.com

Krispy Kreme Challenge

It is a matter of North Carolina pride that the first Krispy Kreme doughnut shop opened in our state in 1937. While the location on Person Street in Raleigh isn’t the original, it’s been there long enough that it comes by its retro look honestly, earning a special place in the hearts of generations of Raleigh natives.

For true aficionados, the pinnacle of Krispy Kreme love is the Krispy Kreme Challenge. The challenge is simple: 2400 calories, 12 doughnuts, 5 miles, 1 hour. Runners start at the Memorial Belltower at NC State University, run 2.5 miles to the Person St. Krispy Kreme, wolf down a dozen doughnuts, and run back to the belltower—all in an hour or less. Dreamed up over two decades ago by some NCSU undergrads, the event has become a beloved Raleigh tradition and the largest unrestricted donor to UNC Children’s Hospital, raising over $2.2 million for the hospital to date.

It will be early. It will be cold. It will be uncomfortable in multiple ways. But when our teenagers said, “Yeah, let’s do it!” we knew we just had to be there. Give a shout if you spot a KidsBooked shirt running by in the crowd! Better yet, join us in the race.

What:

Krispy Kreme Challenge

When:

February 7

Where:

Memorial Belltower, Raleigh

More:

https://krispykremechallenge.com

Triangle-Area School Start Dates: What You Need to Know for Summer Camp Planning

Knowing the first day of school is critical for planning your summer. Find your school start date now.

January 2026

When you’re planning your family’s summer, one date matters more than almost any other: the first day of school in August. It’s tempting to focus on when school ends (since that happens first), but focusing on the tail end of the summer is essential to avoid last-minute scrambling or unexpected gaps.

We’ve rounded up school start dates for the 2026-2027 school year for major Triangle-area school districts, along with tips on how to use this information to plan camps early and save yourself some stress later.

Why school start dates matter when planning summer camps

Many parents are surprised to learn that a majority of summer camps wrap up in early August. That means the last few weeks of summer—those dog days of August when even the pool seems to have lost its sparkle—can be the hardest to find childcare coverage.

If your child’s school starts in late August, you can expect that camp options for the last two weeks of the summer will be much more limited and spots will get snapped up faster. Missing the boat on camps for this period can leave you with few choices for childcare, especially since it’s hard to even find sitters after college students head back to school.

Don’t despair! You don’t have to plan everything at once. There are many more camp options in June and July, so you can afford to be a bit more flexible earlier in the summer. But for those late-August weeks, early planning is key. That’s where having school start dates nailed down—and using a tool like the KidsBooked app—can make all the difference.

A quick note on North Carolina school calendar laws

Under North Carolina state law, traditional public schools cannot start earlier than the Monday closest to August 26. In 2026, that means many traditional-calendar schools will begin on Monday, August 24.

However:

Year-round schools are exempt and typically roll over after July 1, with staggered track start dates

Charter and private schools are also exempt and can set their own calendars

Pre-K programs sometimes start later than K–12

Always double-check your specific school’s calendar, especially if you have kids in different grades or programs.

So…when does school start in your district?

Here’s a roundup of Triangle-area school start dates for the 2026-2027 school year, based on currently available calendars.

1. Wake County Public School System

Wake County families—especially those on year-round tracks—should plan carefully, as summer breaks can look very different from one child to the next.

A friendly reminder about calendar changes

School districts occasionally make adjustments to published calendars, and there have been recent legislative efforts to give districts more flexibility in setting start dates. Be sure to double-check your district’s official calendar and read email updates from your school.

How KidsBooked simplifies summer camp planning

Once you know your school start date, the next question is obvious: How do you fill all those summer weeks with camps your kids will actually enjoy?

That’s where KidsBooked comes in. With the KidsBooked app, you can:

Search hundreds of camps across the Triangle

Find sessions that suit your kids and fit with your family logistics

Heed the call of the wild with these nature-based camps set in forests, fields, and wetlands across the Triangle.

December 2025

Some kids are naturally drawn to dirt, mud, bugs, and bogs—happiest when their shoes are wet, their hands are muddy, and their pockets are full of treasures from the trail. For these kids (and the ones who might just need a little encouragement to step off the sidewalk), nature-based camps offer something special. With the Triangle’s forests, fields, and wetlands as their playgrounds and classrooms, nature camps offer the chance to bask in the wonders of the outdoors all day long.

Time spent outdoors supports kids’ physical health, builds confidence and resilience, and sparks creativity. Whether they’re creating nature art from found materials, splashing in creeks, hiking shaded trails, learning the names of trees and animals, or simply slowing down to observe the world around them, children develop a deeper connection to nature—and to themselves. These experiences help nurture environmental stewardship, teamwork, problem-solving skills, and a lifelong love of being outside.

Here’s a sampling to get you started. You can find plenty more nature-based camps on the KidsBooked app! Simply filter by “Outdoors” and narrow the options by location, dates, timing, ages, and more.

Your options for dependent care benefits may be changing as a result of new legislation. Here’s what you need to know.

November 2025

Last year, we spoke with local CPA William VanHook about how families can get back some of the money we spend on camp through dependent care benefits. It was fun!

As it turns out, tax laws can change. And in 2025, they did indeed, with the passage of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. So, we caught up with VanHook for an update on what families need to know for open enrollment and tax planning this time around.

Here’s a quick rundown of what’s new:

Beginning January 1, 2026, the ceiling has been raised on the amount you may be able to contribute to a dependent care FSA. The new max is $7,500 for single filers and married filing jointly (up from $5,000) and $3,750 for married filing separately (up from $2,500).

BUT, employers are not required to increase the limits for their employees, and various factors may affect your eligibility. So, check with your employer to see if they’re going to make the change, and check with your tax advisor to see what’s going to be most advantageous for you.

If you need a refresher on FSAs, tax credits, and all the caveats, here’s the full blog, with this year’s changes noted in brackets.

Fun with Camp Finances: What You Need to Know for Open Enrollment, Tax Planning, and More

A version of this article was previously published in November 2024. It has been updated for 2025 to reflect changes in tax law.

Did you know that most families can get back some of the money we spend on camp each year? It’s all thanks to the Magical World of Tax Law.

If those words send a chill down your spine, fear not! William VanHook, a CPA formerly with Horizon Tax Advisors in Cary [now with Charter Success Partners in Durham], kindly offered to be our guide. He told us how, with a little advance planning and good documentation, families can save money with dependent care benefits.

VanHook says, “As you come up on open enrollment season, make sure you have a good tax or financial advisor, because they can advise you on how to best take advantage of what you can do with an FSA and save on taxes. Childcare is expensive, and money is a non-renewable resource!”

With his expert help, we pulled together a quick rundown to help you understand the options and maximize your savings.

But first, the requisite caveats:

Dependent care benefits are broader than just kids. They can also apply to adults who meet certain criteria, but since this is a camp blog, we’ll focus on the rules around kids and childcare, with a focus on camp.

This blog is not your accountant! A professional tax advisor is the best person to provide advice tailored to your situation.

Three options for saving $$

Buckle up and get ready for a twisty-turnsey journey through three fabulously frugal dependent care benefit options. It’ll be fun!

1. The FSA

A flexible spending account (FSA) lets you use pre-tax dollars to pay for dependent care expenses. The only way to get one is through your employer; if your employer doesn’t offer an FSA, proceed to option #2.

The benefit

An FSA reduces your taxable income, because money that goes into the account is not “seen” as income for tax purposes. This invisibility spell makes it most beneficial for families in higher tax brackets.

How it works

You must decide during open enrollment how much money to funnel from your paycheck into the FSA during the coming year. That amount is then broken down into payments that are deducted from each paycheck throughout the year and added to your FSA. When you pay for summer camps or other qualifying dependent care expenses during that year, you can file a claim and get reimbursed for those expenses from your FSA.

The max amount you can put into an FSA is $7,500 for single filers or married filing jointly, or $3,750 for married filing separately. [New! These limits, effective January 1, 2026, are different from previous years, when the limits were $5,000 and $2,500, respectively. However, employers are not required to increase the limits for their employees, and various factors may affect your eligibility. So, check with your employer to see if they’re going to make the change, and we still recommend checking with your tax advisor to see what’s going to be most advantageous for you.] The exact amount of money an FSA will save you depends on your tax bracket and some other factors. Just to throw out some ballpark examples, if you put $5,000 in your FSA for the year, you could expect to save around $1,750 if you’re in the 35% tax bracket or $1,100 if you’re in the 22% tax bracket.

The downside

Once the money goes in, it can only come out for qualifying dependent care expenses, and it doesn’t roll over year to year. So, if you have sad, lonely money left unclaimed in your FSA at the end of the year, that money slips away from your grasp forever. However, there is a grace period that allows you to submit claims for care provided from January 1-March 15 of the following year, so if you can take advantage of track-out or teacher workday camps during those months, you can still give those leftover FSA funds a new lease on life—in your wallet!

The bottom line is that an FSA can be a great way to save money, but it’s worth thinking carefully about what to put in your FSA during open enrollment each year. “Because an FSA is use-it-or-lose-it, we recommend doing a look back and seeing what you’ve spent in the past year or two in order to help forecast what you may need and maximize your benefit without losing the money,” VanHook notes.

2. The tax credit

The dependent care tax credit can save you money by reducing the amount of taxes you owe. If you don’t have access to an FSA, you definitely want to see if you can qualify for a tax credit.

The benefit

A portion of the money you spend on qualifying dependent care expenses can be deducted from the total amount of taxes you owe for that year. Owing less is essentially saving more. Yay money!

How it works

When you file your taxes, you can report what you spent that year on dependent care. If your family and the expenses qualify, you’ll owe less in taxes.

The max amount of care expenses you can claim for the tax credit is $3,000 for one child or $6,000 for two or more. (And unlike that last cookie left on the plate, this amount doesn’t have to be evenly split among your kids.) The tax credit ranges from 20-35% of the qualifying expenses, depending on your income. People with lower incomes get higher deductions. If you’re in the lowest tax bracket and claim the max amount of expenses, your tax credit would be $1,050 for one child or $2,100 for two. If you’re in the highest tax bracket, your tax credit maxes out at $600 for one child or $1,200 for two.

The downside

Whether you can take advantage of the dependent care tax credit depends on your tax burden, employment status, and other factors, so not every family can benefit. For example, if you don’t owe any taxes, you can’t benefit from the credit. Also, you must work or attend school full-time for at least 5 months of the year to qualify. If you’re married filing jointly, this rule applies to both spouses, so if you’ve got a stay-at-home parent in your family, no tax credit. Sigh.

3. The combo deal

You can actually take advantage of both an FSA and the tax credit in the same year. But, no double-dipping! Uncle Sam is smarter than that. You can’t claim the same expense for the FSA and the tax credit, and any amount that is reimbursed through your FSA is subtracted from the total amount you can claim for the tax credit.

The combo deal can help you eke out every last cent of savings, especially if you didn’t put enough into your FSA. But the optimal balance will depend on how much you spend on childcare, your income/tax bracket, and other particulars.

Things to know

There are a zillion caveats within all of this, but these are the three biggies when it comes to camp.

This only applies to expenses for kids under age 13.

On your child’s 13th birthday, dependent care benefits go poof and you can’t claim any expenses for them on your FSA or taxes for the rest of the year. Plus, you now have a teenager! Double yay!

Camps, daycares, and afterschool programs count, but extracurriculars like music lessons and sports programs don’t.

Dependent care benefits are meant to help offset the cost of care parents need in order to work or go to school, not to help with all the numerous (numerous!) expenses of raising a child. Those extra enrichment programs are great, but you can’t claim dependent care benefits for them.

Day camps count, but overnight camps don’t.

This is annoying, because clearly overnight camps provide coverage during the day, which allows parents to work just like day camps do. But when has tax law ever cared about being annoying?

Getting your documents in order

Whether you’re making a claim on your FSA or filing for the tax credit, you’re going to need to prove your expenses qualify. “Make sure you have the proper documentation so that your tax preparer or FSA provider is able to substantiate the expenses,” says VanHook. “You really need to have the paperwork in place to take advantage of either scenario.”

Collecting documents = saving money!

Here’s what to have on hand. And trust us when we say that it’s WAY easier to collect this info throughout the year as you make purchases, rather than scrambling to assemble it all at the end. (Have we personally engaged in frantic phone-calling sprees begging camp directors for their EINs in April? We can neither confirm nor deny.)

To claim a dependent care tax credit

You’ll need to provide receipts or statements showing the services provided, dates attended, and cost of care. You’ll also need the name, address, and Employer Identification Number (EIN) or social security number of each care provider. Take your time and do this right: there are no second chances to provide this information. Uncle Sam is like that sometimes.

To submit a claim with your FSA

You’ll need to submit a claim form AND provide itemized receipts for all qualifying expenses. Credit card receipts or canceled checks aren’t sufficient. The claim form will ask you to list services provided, the name of the dependent, dates attended, cost of care, and the name, address, and EIN or social security number of the care provider. If your claim is rejected, you can re-submit it with additional documentation. Just be sure to cross your fingers AND toes this time around.

Tell us what else vexes you

We hope this journey through the Magical World of Tax Law has helped turn your deer-in-the-headlights eyes (😬) into cha-ching money-saving eyes (🤑) around using dependent care benefits to offset some of your camp costs. What else can we help clarify for you with help from awesome experts like William VanHook, CPA, our expert guide for this blog, or Robert Lubeznik-Warner, PhD, who told us all about the Science of Summer Camp?
October 2025

Is your fridge groaning under the weight of kid-made masterpieces? Does your playroom look like a mini makerspace? An arts and crafts camp might be just the thing to fuel your young artist.

Arts-focused camps not only provide a fun outlet for imagination but give kids a chance to build new skills, find their artistic voice, and take pride in what they create. Whether your child loves painting, sculpture, sewing, or just getting messy with glue and glitter, there’s a camp that’s the right fit.

Art camps can also provide a welcome break from the summer heat. Most are held primarily indoors, so kids can experiment and explore in the blissful comfort of air conditioning. This makes them a chill counterpoint to the high-energy, sun-soaked environment of more outdoor-oriented camps.

We’ve rounded up 8 artsy camps to start your search. Clear some space on your fridge and get ready for creative adventures!

Search by date and find more artsy camps on the KidsBooked app.

Considering your first sleepaway? Find expert tips on how to decide whether overnight camp is right for your family.

September 2025

There’s nothing quite like the anticipation of packing your bags for your first week at sleepaway camp. From the first cheesy ice-breakers to the closing ceremony, overnight camps offer an unparalleled setting to foster independence, responsibility, and personal growth. And, it’s just plain fun to spend your days—and nights!—building memories and friendships that can last a lifetime.

Of course, the prospect of going away from home for the first time can make anyone feel a tad nervous. Here are four steps to see if sleepaway is right for your family and set your child up for success.

1. First, check in with yourself.

If you were an overnight camper as a kid, you probably have a pretty good feel for whether it’s right for your family. If this would be your first experience with overnight camp, do some research, chat with friends and family, and probe your own feelings about what the sleepaway experience would mean.

“It can be good for parents to consider their own comfort with sending their kid to camp, because if they’re really uncomfortable with it, then it’s not as likely to be successful. How do you feel about sending your kid to camp, and is there a way to get comfortable with it? If not, maybe this isn’t the year to do it,” says Jenny Robb, PhD, a clinical psychologist who serves children, adolescents, and adults at Pine State Psychological Services, PLLC in Raleigh.

If you’re hesitant, try to articulate what you’re concerned about. Camp can be really good for kids, but it can also provoke anxiety. Think through both the upsides and downsides of encouraging your child to give it a try. If you like the idea conceptually but aren’t yet totally on board, it may be a matter of finding the right camp—one that you feel you can trust, aligns with your values, and will provide the experiences you want for your child.

2. Consider your child’s experience.

The pace and process of growing up is a little different for everyone, and there’s no magical age when every kid is ready for overnight camp. Reflect on who your child is and where they are in their journey toward independence. They don’t have to be total pros at being away from home to go to camp, but it’s good to look for clues that they would be able to enjoy it.

“Think about how much practice your kid has had being away from you. If you’re considering sending them to sleepaway camp, it might be good to give them a little bit of practice sleeping somewhere else,” says Dr. Robb. For example, she suggests that spending a night at grandma’s place, going for a sleepover at a trusted friend’s house, or even having a camp-out in the backyard can give a taste of the camp experience. “If your child is doing well with those things, then they might be ready to go to sleepaway camp.”

3. Check in with your child.

If you’re ready and you think they are, too, it’s time to broach the topic. Explain what overnight camp is like and why you think it might be a good experience. If you have a camp in mind, go online together and check out photos of the cabins and activities. If not, start the search together! You can also ask other parents for recommendations or even coordinate so your child can go together with a friend.

Once they have a sense of what it would be like, give your child room to process how they’re feeling about it. Have a few conversations on different days to allow time for concerns to bubble up. Work together to answer any questions they have, drawing from your own experience, advice from people you trust, or information on the camp’s website. Many camps offer virtual tours and camp directors are happy to answer questions.

To the extent possible, try not to rush into a decision. Once you have all the details, your child will probably still appreciate a bit of time to think about it on their own or talk with friends before committing.

4. Start preparing them for success.

If you decide to go for it, don’t let opportunity pass you by! Sleepaway camps can fill up fast, so make sure you know when registration opens, what dates and programs you’re targeting, how to sign up, and when deposits and payments are due. Once you’re registered, pay attention to camp communications about medical forms, packing lists, and anything else you need to prepare.

In addition to staying on top of the logistics, you can help your child prepare by having them play a bigger role in managing their daily routines. “Fostering some independence at home can be helpful as your child is going off to sleepaway camp for the first time,” says Dr. Robb.

For example, tell your child the day’s plans and the weather forecast and have them assemble their own outfit and gear. Or, stop proactively reminding them to brush their teeth and encourage them to remember on their own. Teaching them to apply their own sunscreen is also key.

As the big day approaches, stay attuned to any emotions they may be feeling. It’s normal (and totally okay!) to experience some nerves. Accept that and help them to focus on the positives—the friends they’ll make, the fun they’ll have, and all the reasons you decided together that they’re ready for the challenge.

Five are within a couple hours of the Triangle: Camp Kanata (in Wake Forest), Camp Weaver (Greensboro), Camp Hanes and Camp Cheerio (toward the mountains), and Camps Sea Gull and Seafarer (at the coast). Each features traditional camp activities such as water sports, swimming, ropes courses, field games, and arts & crafts, as well as an array of special activities tailored to the local environment, such as sailing, rafting, and caving.

Many of the colleges and universities in our area run summer programs, giving middle and high schoolers a chance to enjoy a taste of life on a college campus while taking a deep dive into areas of interest like STEM, foreign languages, sports, and the arts. The big three—Duke University, UNC Chapel Hill, and NC State University—all host summer programs, but don’t stop there! Great options are also available at other campuses including Meredith College, NC Central University, and Campbell University. The NC School of Science and Math also runs residential programs at its own two campuses in addition to four other UNC System campuses across the state.

August 2025

Don’t you hate it when a teacher workday catches you off-guard and becomes an impromptu bring-your-kid-to-work day? Fortunately, lots of camps in our area offer single-day camps aligned with local schools’ teacher workdays. Now’s the time to review your school calendar and fill those gaps with fun camps.

In addition to allowing you to work in peace, sending your kid to a teacher workday camp is a great chance to try something new! It’s way less of a commitment than a weeklong summer camp, so you kiddo can dabble in something different and see if it clicks.

We’ve rounded up 7 Triangle-area teacher workday camps to get you started. In addition, you can find plenty of other options in our list of Fit & Flexible Year-Round Camps (most are open every day) and our roundup of Camps That Have After School Too (many of which offer full-day care on teacher workdays).

August 2025

The shift from summer fun to back-to-school prep is the perfect time to reflect as a family on how the season went. A casual, low-stress convo now can go a long way toward helping you plan for next year. Not only is it smart to do this while camp experiences are still fresh in your minds, doing it now lets you brainstorm without the pressure of making firm decisions about next year.

So, settle down with some snacks and check in about what went well and what you might want to do next time around.

Try these 20 questions to get the conversation rolling!

1.

What were your favorite camps this year, and why?

2.

What’s one thing you did at camp that you’re proud of?

3.

Did anything surprise you about camp this year?

4.

What were the most fun or meaningful activities?

5.

What was a challenge you faced—and how did you handle it?

6.

Did you learn any new skills or try something totally new?

7.

Did you miss anything about home? What helped you feel better?

8.

How did you feel when it was time to leave camp?

9.

What’s one thing from this summer you think you’ll always remember?

10.

Which camps would you want to go back to again?

11.

Are there other camps or types of programs you’d be interested in trying?

12.

Did you hear about any cool camps from friends?

13.

Are there any friends you would like us to coordinate with for camp planning?

14.

If you could change one thing for next year, what would it be?

15.

Do you want to go to camp for the same amount of time next year—or more or less?

16.

What was something that didn’t go as expected?

17.

How can we help you feel even more prepared next summer?

18.

What worked well for us as a family in terms of communication, packing, or planning?

19.

Are there any logistics we’d like to simplify, such as commutes, carpooling, or timing?

20.

What could we do now to make next summer awesome?

June 2025

At the risk of raining on your pool day, we have news: It’s time to sign up for after school care. Yes, we know that the school year just ended. Yes, we know that summer is supposed to be all popsicles and vacations. But you can do this! And we’re here to help.

Camp time is a great time to think about what to look for in an after school program. Does your kid need to burn off energy with nonstop games and sports? Love the charm of life on a farm? Or thrive with indoor time exploring STEM or the arts?

Since after school is often a longer commitment than a week of summer camp, it’s a good idea to shop around and see what best suits your child’s personality.

To get you started, we’ve rounded up 10 camps that also offer after school programming. Check ‘em out, find a fit, and get back to your poolside summer read!

1. YMCA of the Triangle

No matter where in the Triangle you are, there is a good chance that YMCA of the Triangle has you covered. Our regional YMCA network serves an impressive 164 schools and locations with after school care! And 58 of those sites also have a before school option, generally starting at 7:00 AM. The best way to scope out which options work for you is to filter and search their comprehensive After School Programs webpage. All programs are already open for registration, with an early-bird discount if you sign up by September 6.

These recreation-based programs give children a place to explore arts and crafts, sports and fitness, nature, music, food experiences and more under the supervision of staff trained to create a safe environment to play and learn. The program brochure offers all the details and registration is open now.

3. Local schools and parks & rec programs

Many Triangle-area elementary schools offer their own quality after school care onsite for reasonable prices. Now is a great time to investigate offerings with your school or school district website or information hotlines, because spots can fill up fast for these convenient options.

In addition to the Raleigh Parks & Recreation offerings above, several other local parks & rec organizations offer after school care. Sometimes these are announced in the summer, but these municipalities have already published their after school options: Durham, Orange County, Garner, and Raleigh’s other afterschool program, Community Afterschool Program.

We asked a camp doctor about common ailments and what families can do to support a healthy camp experience.

June 2025

Get our family gabbing around a summer fire pit and you’ll inevitably hear two stories. First, there’s the time my dad built a lean-to out of pine boughs at summer camp. As he slumbered beneath the dripping sap, an insect attacked his eyelid, swelling it shut for days. Then there’s my husband’s tale of a cabinmate who sprayed glow-stick goo into his own eyes, sending him stumbling to the infirmary with a distinctive B-movie glowing-eyed zombie look.

What is it with eye mishaps at summer camp? And what other health issues might families expect—or better yet, take steps to prevent—when kids set off for summer adventures?

To get the skinny on staying healthy at camp, we sat down with Michael Brown, MD, a Raleigh pediatrician who serves stints as a camp doctor. He shared some great insights on what camps and families can do to support a healthy summer.

Camp health basics

Counselors are typically the first point-person to recognize and respond to health issues, escalating to nurses, doctors, or camp directors as needed. All camp personnel should have some training in first aid and emergency response procedures.

Larger overnight camps often have a dedicated health clinic onsite, while day camps might have more limited medical resources. It’s a good idea to find out how health issues are handled, especially if your child has known health issues such as allergies. If this is not mentioned in camp materials, ask the camp director.

Camps of any size or type should have policies and procedures for staff training, maintaining safe environments, managing medications, and communicating with parents.

Common camp ailments

Dr. Brown says many of the health issues that happen at camp are the same things your family sees at home during an active summer day.

Skin issues

Sunburn and bug bites are among the most common issues. Minor cuts, scrapes, and blisters are also fairly frequent, along with rashes from poison ivy, sand, or other irritants. Sunscreen, bugspray, and sturdy footwear can prevent a lot of issues. Clothing choices such as hats, rash guards, long pants, and good socks can also help, depending on camp activities and weather.

Good clothing choices can prevent a lot of common health issues at camp.

Stomach complaints

Nausea or upset stomach can be quite common at camp. Sometimes the cause is a virus, but Dr. Brown says often it’s related to heat or simply nerves. Most cases resolve on their own with hydration and some down time, but camp personnel keep a close eye out for fever, worsening symptoms, or clusters of kids becoming ill.

Overstimulation

The hubbub of camp life, new people, unfamiliar foods, and constant activity can be a lot to handle! It’s not uncommon for kids to visit the infirmary just to get a break when they’re feeling overwhelmed or homesick. Spending time in a calm environment with supportive adults is sometimes all they need to get back on track.

Heat and dehydration

If you haven’t noticed, North Carolina summers are HOT. Heat exhaustion and dehydration are always a possibility when spending time outdoors, especially when kids are in the sun or engaging in high-energy activities (and when aren’t they?). Taking breaks, seeking shade, and drinking plenty of water can help to prevent these issues.

Viruses

Just like at school, kids can swap germs when playing or sleeping in close quarters at camp. Camps are always on the lookout for signs that stomach bugs, COVID, flu, or other infectious illnesses might be circulating. Most camps have sick-day policies similar to those at school, requiring campers to isolate at home or in the infirmary until 24 hours have passed without a fever or other major symptoms. Encouraging kids to follow good hygiene, wash their hands or use sanitizer frequently, and tell a counselor if they feel sick can help to reduce the spread.

Camps are always on the lookout for signs that infectious illnesses might
be circulating.

Bigger issues

Camp counselors and health teams typically handle minor issues onsite, while bigger issues might require a trip to a clinic for stitches, x-rays, or bloodwork. Overnight camps sometimes stock common prescription medications or can call prescriptions in to a local pharmacy. Just like at home or school, camp personnel would call 9-1-1 for anything serious enough to warrant a trip to the hospital.

Communication is key

Camps should have well-established systems for communicating with parents about health issues. They probably won’t alert you about every band-aid, but any bigger issues or repeated or overnight visits to the health clinic will definitely warrant a call to keep you in the loop.

Parents have a responsibility to communicate with camps, too. Most camps ask for health information as part of their enrollment package. Dr. Brown urges families to be comprehensive when filling out these forms, noting that this information is held to the same patient privacy standards as any other healthcare setting.

“It’s important that parents are honest and list everything that’s going on with their kids,” said Dr. Brown. “That’s really helpful, not only for the medical staff, but for the counselors and the camp directors to provide the best experience for kids. Hiding something you don’t want people to know about is not in your kids’ best interest.”

So, be sure to disclose any allergies, medical conditions, or psychological issues your child may be experiencing. At check-in, be ready to provide any medications they need along with instructions on the timing and dosage. Camps will generally have over-the-counter medications like pain killers, antihistamines, and anti-itch ointments on hand and may ask for your permission to administer those if needed.

Signs of a safety-first camp

Dr. Brown says safety is top of mind for camps, and most have robust strategies for avoiding accidents and handling health concerns. “I think things have changed quite a bit since we were kids,” he says. “Most camps have pretty stringent protocols these days. They do a lot of staff training to try to make sure kids are safe, since that’s really their top priority.”

Different camp activities may require specialized safety gear and training.

Camps take pride in the steps they take to keep kids safe, and many will include a section on this in camp materials. You can also keep an eye out for these features:

Trained staff (for example, CPR training, safety drills, lifeguards for water activities, designated emergency responders)

Clear policies (for example, rules around camper to counselor ratios, systems for managing medications, good parent communication)

Safe environments (for example, fenced/gated pools, well-maintained grounds and equipment)

Safety equipment (for example, life vests, helmets, first aid kits)

Allergy protocols (for example, epi pens, food preparation/separation practices)

Supporting health at home

In addition to parents and camps, kids themselves have a role to play in staying safe and healthy at camp. Take a moment to talk with your child about potential issues and make sure they have what they need to succeed.

Getting the right gear is crucial. Plenty of sunscreen, the right clothing, and a refillable water bottle are the foundation of a healthy summer. Make sure to check your camp’s packing list and follow all rules around what to bring (or not bring). Go through the list together and make sure your child knows what’s in their bag and how to use it.

Empower your child to speak up. Counselors won’t necessarily notice every issue, so it’s important for kids to tell someone if they’re injured or not feeling well. They should know that counselors, camp directors, or camp doctors and nurses are there to help, not only for applying band-aids but also for help navigating homesickness, trouble with camp activities, or any other issues.

“Certainly, parents can talk to their kids about wearing sunscreen, wearing bug spray, drinking water throughout the day. But also, just making sure kids know that they can come and talk to us at the health center about whatever the issue is. We can help with a lot of things!”
Dr. Michael Brown, MD

Finally, Dr. Brown says it’s helpful to encourage kids to approach camp with a flexible mindset. A lot about camp life will be different from home—the activities, the environment, the food—and that’s all part of the experience. Being willing to try new things and go with the flow can help campers push past their nervousness, bounce back when things don’t go as planned, and focus on having fun!

Sunburn is one of the most common—and most preventable!—health issues at camp. Follow these three steps for sun safety.

June 2025

In our conversation about health at camp, pediatrician Michael Brown, MD, said sun protection is at the top of his list when preparing kids for a safe and fun time outdoors.

“For my own kids, the biggest preventable thing we worry about is sunburn—making sure that they have enough sunblock and making sure they’re putting it on,” he says. Case in point, he recalls when his son got a terrible sunburn in the first few days of camp and spent the rest of the week sitting under a tree while his buddies frolicked in the pool.

I remember the record-scratch moment when I read my first camp policy declaring that counselors wouldn’t be applying kids’ sunscreen and the kids were expected to do it themselves. We had gotten used to the more hands-on care at preschool, and I had no idea how my five-year-old was going to take on that level of responsibility.

Somehow, he did. But the sunscreen struggle is real (even for many adults!), and keeping up with sun protection at camp can pose some special challenges.

Here are three tips for sun safety at camp:

1. Think outside the ‘screen.

Hats! Clothing! Shade! Minimizing the amount of skin that’s exposed to the sun makes it way easier to avoid a burn. Find clothing that your kid feels comfortable playing in that can also offer some sun protection. A rash guard or swim shirt can be especially helpful for water activities. And, it wouldn’t hurt to remind them that staying in the shade is a good idea when camp activities permit it.

2. Teach your kid to slather.

Establish an expectation that your child should wear sunscreen at all times during outdoor activities. Help them get comfortable applying it well before the first time they’ll have to do it on their own at camp. Practice at home so they know how much to apply and how to do it thoroughly.

There are lots of brands and types to choose from—lotions, sticks, sprays, and more. The American Academy of Pediatrics has some helpful guidance. Ultimately, the best sunscreen is the one they’ll use. If your child resists applying sunscreen at home, they aren’t likely to do it willingly at camp. Keep trying until you find a kind they’ll tolerate. Then, send them to camp with way more than you think they’ll need!

3. Talk about timing.

Talk through how they’ll reapply sunscreen throughout the day. You might not know each day’s schedule ahead of time, but you can offer strategies such as reapplying between each activity or at certain meal times, aiming for every 2 hours. Label their sunscreen with their name and make sure they have a way to keep it handy as they move through different camp activities. You can also talk with camp counselors to enlist their help with sunscreen reminders.

Find more information and tips at the Sun Safety information page from the American Academy of Pediatrics. And, after you’ve packed your kiddos off to camp with their hats and sunscreen, don’t forget to protect your own skin!

Ready or not, summer camps are starting soon! We’ve got 6 proven strategies to get your head in the game.

May 2025

School’s wrapping up and mosquitoes are on the prowl, which means ready or not, summer camp is starting soon!

We’ve got 6 proven strategies to get your head in the game:

1. Remember what you signed up for.

The sign-up scramble happened ages ago, and it would be completely understandable if your recordkeeping got a little jumbled in the frenzy. Look through your registration confirmations and make sure your calendar has the correct start and end dates for each camp. It’s also a good time to note when upcoming payments will be due.

2. Think through your daily logistics.

Note the location and drop-off/pick-up windows for each camp. Decide who will do the driving and think through how the route and timing will jive with your commute. If it’s looking tricky, consider arranging a carpool or enlisting help from friends and family.

3. Make a game plan for the gear.

Each camp has its own requirements for what kids should bring to camp (or leave at home). Review guidance on what to wear, what to bring, lunches and snacks, and prohibited items. From morning sunscreen applications to managing wet swimsuits, there are a zillion tiny logistics that make camp days different from your school-year routine. Make a plan to keep track of weekly checklists and manage all that gear.

4. Check in with your child.

A new environment or sudden change in routine can be tough for kids. Take a moment now to talk through your family’s summer plans. Look at each camp’s website or social media together to see what to expect and start getting excited about the experience. Invite your kids to ask questions and continue the conversation as you get closer to each camp’s first day.

5. Know your options.

You can’t plan for every contingency, but you can plan for some! Review camp policies on inclement weather, illness, payment deadlines, and cancellations. If you anticipate any schedule changes, it’s best to know your options sooner rather than later so you can try to get a refund, switch weeks, or find another camper to fill your spot, depending on camp policies.

6. Read those emails.

Most camps will send emails with everything you need to know about drop-off and pick-up procedures, gear requirements, payments, health forms, and more. It can be intimidating to see these messages pile up in your inbox, but staying on top of them will save you a lot of summer morning stress. Read the emails as they come in, ask any questions you have ahead of time, and thank yourself later when you’re able to genuinely embrace that carefree summer vibe as you drop your kid off on the first day of camp!
